Maasai Mara and Great Rift Valley

Start the trip in the splendid Maasai Mara National Park. Then take a tour to three most impressive lakes of the Great Rift Valley. Meet the Njemps, close relatives of the Maasai, and let them warmly welcome you to their village. Let the Empakaai Cultural Safari team take you to experience some most spectacular places in Kenya.

Day 0. Welcome to Kenya
Your flight arrives to the Nairobi International Airport, where the Empakaai crew will meet you, welcome you to Kenya and transfer you to your hotel in the city of Nairobi.

Day 1. From Nairobi to Maasai Mara NP
After breakfast and some quick shopping at a local supermarket, we start our drive from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara National Park. We’ll be enjoying some amazing landscapes along the way and will stop at the viewpoint overlooking the Great Rift Valley. We continue our drive down the valley towards the Maasai district of Narok, where we will stop for lunch. In the afternoon we will have a look around the town of Narok and then proceed towards the Maasai Mara National Reserve. We arrive to our tented camp later in the afternoon, on time to enjoy an open-air dinner amidst beautiful nature, surrounded by sounds of wildlife.

Day 2. Maasai Mara National Reserve
This morning we get up early to have some breakfast and be at the park gate on time. We can’t be late for our first game drive! Chances are very high here to spot elephant, lion, zebra and various antelope. If we are lucky we might see cheetah and leopard too. We will be game driving in the Maasai Mara National Reserve the entire morning, and have our lunch next to a hippo pool. After lunch, we continue admiring the wildlife while game driving and will come out of the gate late in the afternoon. We enjoy our dinner at the camp under the stunning starry skies.

Day 3. From Maasai Mara National Reserve to Kericho
We leave the Maasai Mara National Park in the morning. Today our destination is the town of Kericho, “Heart of Kenyan tea”. Here we will visit the largest tea plantation in the country, which was founded by Europeans. We will visit one of the tea farms and admire beautiful green landscapes around us. We arrive to Kericho Tea Hotel later to enjoy a relaxed afternoon.

Day 4. From Kericho to Lake Baringo
We start driving the northern direction this morning and will cross the Equator today. We will be stopping at the crossing point to visit a demonstration of some curious laws of nature. After lunch our journey proceeds towards Lake Baringo, one of the magnificent Great Rift Valley lakes. We arrive to our hotel and in the evening we will visit a local village to experience their hospitality and take a look at how people live here. We can also visit one of the local schools.

Day 5. Lake Baringo
We will get up early in the morning and leave after breakfast to go bird watching. After brunch, there will be a boat waiting to take us see hippo’s, crocodiles and African Fish Eagle. We will also see beautiful islands on this amazing fresh water lake. After lunch, we will be invited to enjoy a swimming pool in a lodge next door. We’ll be back to our hotel for dinner.

Day 6. From Lake Baringo to Lake Nakuru
We leave the lovely Lake Baringo area and drive to Lake Nakuru. We stop along the way to visit a village of Njemps, who come from the Maa family. This is a unique chance to spend a couple of hours with Njemps and get a glimpse into how their life is organised. After we say goodbye to Njemps, we continue to the city of Nakuru to do some shopping at a local supermarket. The city of Nakuru is the fourth largest city of Kenya and was established during the colonial era. We’ll continue with our afternoon programme after checking into our hotel. This afternoon we get an opportunity to visit a local orphanage, where we spend some valuable time interacting with children.

Day 7. From Lake Nakuru to Lake Naivasha
We do a morning game drive in the breathtakingly beautiful Lake Nakuru National Park. The wildlife here is in abundance, there is always a good chance to spot a white rhino and if we are lucky, we might see a black rhino. Leopard and lion can often be seen here as well. After lunch, we will say goodbye to the Lake Nakuru National Park and start our drive towards Lake Naivasha. We reach the Crater Lake Game Sanctuary, where a local guide will show us around this beautiful place with a lot of fantastic wildlife to observe.

Day 8. From Lake Naivasha to Nairobi
In the morning after breakfast we are going to do a game walk at the Crater Lake Game Sanctuary. You will most probably see giraffe, zebra, many birds and monkeys from very close, while buffalo and hippo can be spotted from a distance. After the game walk it is time to have lunch and start driving towards Nairobi.
